Hubert Thomas Spencer, known as Tom Spencer, was born on February 28, 1951. He is a former American baseball player. He played as an outfielder in Major League Baseball. Tom played for the Chicago White Sox for one season. After playing, he became a manager in the minor leagues. He led three teams to win their league championships. These teams were the Asheville Tourists in 1984, the Geneva Cubs in 1987, and the Charlotte Knights in 1997.
Early Life and Baseball
Tom Spencer was born in a town called Gallipolis, Ohio. He went to Gallia Academy High School there. After high school, he played college baseball at the University of Rio Grande.
Coaching and Managing Teams
After his time as a player, Tom Spencer became a coach and manager. He was the first base coach for the Cleveland Indians in 1998 and 1989.
In 2003, Spencer became the manager of the Memphis Redbirds. This team was a Triple-A affiliate for the St. Louis Cardinals. However, he was replaced by Danny Sheaffer during that season.
Later, on December 9, 2010, it was announced that Spencer would manage the Lancaster JetHawks. This team was an Advanced Class A affiliate for the Houston Astros. He managed them for the 2011 season.
