Thomas Geoffrey Wilkinson was born on February 5, 1948, in Leeds, England. His father, Thomas Wilkinson, was a farmer. When Tom was 11, his family moved to Canada for five years. They then returned to the United Kingdom and ran a pub in Cornwall.
Tom Wilkinson studied English and American literature at the University of Kent. While there, he became very interested in acting. After finishing his degree, he went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He graduated in 1973.
