Tomares is a town in southern Spain, located in the region of Andalusia. It is a municipality, which means it's like a local government area. Tomares is a Seville suburb, a town near a big city. It has over 25,000 people living there.
Tomares is only two kilometers west of the Triana area of Seville. The River Guadalquivir separates Tomares from the main city. Other towns in the region of Aljarafe surround Tomares. Sometimes, the borders between these towns are just one street. This creates a large urban area called a conurbation, where many towns grow together.
Discovering Ancient Roman Treasure in Tomares
In 2016, something amazing happened in Tomares! Construction workers were digging in Zaudin Park. They found a huge collection of ancient Roman coins. This collection is called a hoard. It weighed about 600 kilograms (1,300 pounds)!
What Was Found in the Roman Hoard?
The bronze coins were stored in 19 large clay jars called amphoras. These jars were used by Romans to carry liquids or grains. The coins were brand new when they were put into the amphoras. They had pictures and names of Roman emperors like Maximian and Constantine. Some of the coins were even covered in silver, making them look very special. This discovery helps us learn more about the history of the Roman Empire in Spain.
