History of Toney
Toney began as a community around 1897. A man known as "Jim" Toney helped to establish it. The community was named in honor of Blanche Rawls Toney, who became the first postmaster in 1898. She was likely named by her husband, James E. Toney.
By 1899, a railway owned by the "Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis" company ran through Toney. There was even a train station, called a depot, in the village. At that time, Toney also had several important businesses. These included a gin (for processing cotton), a grist mill (for grinding grain), a saw mill (for cutting wood), a blacksmith shop, and four stores.
The train service continued for many years, from about 1897 until 1929. It was stopped because the railway company faced financial problems. Even though the trains no longer run, the old depot building is still standing. You can find it in its original spot on "Old Railroad Bed Road."
