Tong Dizhou facts for kids
Tong Dizhou (Chinese: 童第周) (born May 28, 1902 – died March 30, 1979) was a famous Chinese scientist. He was an embryologist, which means he studied how living things develop from tiny beginnings, like eggs. He is best known for his important work in cloning. He also used to be a vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a big science organization in China.
About His Life
Tong Dizhou was born in a place called Yinxian in the Zhejiang province of China. He went to Fudan University and finished his studies there in 1924. He earned a degree in psychology, which is the study of the mind. Later, in 1930, he earned a special advanced degree called a PhD from Free University Brussels in Belgium.
A very important thing Tong Dizhou did was in 1963. He took the DNA (which is like the instruction manual for life) from a male carp fish and put it into the egg of a female carp. He was the first person ever to successfully clone a fish this way! Because of this amazing achievement, many people call him "the father of China's clone."
Tong Dizhou was also a respected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was the very first director of its Institute of Oceanology. He led this institute, which studies the ocean, from when it started in 1950 until 1978.
