The Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar is a fun restaurant and tiki bar located inside the Fairmont San Francisco hotel. You can find it in the Nob Hill area of San Francisco, California. A tiki bar is a type of bar or restaurant that has a theme inspired by the islands of the South Pacific.

This special place is named after the island nation of Tonga. It first opened its doors in 1945. Before it became the Tonga Room, the space was an indoor swimming pool called the Terrace Plunge, built in 1929. The pool was later changed into the Tonga Room's unique lagoon. The restaurant also got a new look in 1967. In 2024, the Tonga Room began using different types of glasses, moving away from its traditional ceramic tiki mugs.

What Makes the Tonga Room Special?

The City of San Francisco Planning Department has called the Tonga Room a "historical resource." This means it's an important place with a lot of history. They noted its special features, like the man-made lagoon, indoor rainstorms, and decorations made from lava rock.

A Unique Tiki Experience

A report from the city said that the Tonga Room is very important because it's rare. It's considered one of the best examples of a "high-style" tiki bar and restaurant in San Francisco. This means it has a very detailed and impressive island theme.
