Anthony Austin Street (born 8 February 1926 – died 25 October 2022) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1966 to 1984. He represented the area of Corangamite for the Liberal Party.
Tony Street held important jobs as a minister in the government led by Malcolm Fraser. He was the Minister for Labor and Immigration, Employment and Industrial Relations, Industrial Relations, and finally, the Minister for Foreign Affairs. His father, Geoffrey Street, was also a federal government minister.

Tony Street was born in Melbourne on 8 February 1926. He grew up on his family's property called 'Eildon' near Lismore, Victoria. His father, Geoffrey Street, became a member of parliament in 1934 and a minister in 1938. Sadly, his father died in a plane crash in 1940 when Tony was 14 years old.
Tony went to Melbourne Grammar School. After finishing school in 1944, he joined the Royal Australian Navy. He served as a sailor on several ships, including HMAS Norman (M 84), HMAS Queenborough, and HMAS Shropshire.
Political Career
In 1966, Tony Street was elected to the Australian House of Representatives. He became a member of parliament for the Liberal Party, representing the Corangamite area in Victoria. He was re-elected many times and stayed in this job until he retired on 18 January 1984.
Ministerial Roles
Tony Street held several important jobs as a minister in the Australian government:
- From 1971, he helped the Minister for Labour and National Service.
- In 1975, he became the Minister for Labor and Immigration. This role involved looking after jobs and people coming to live in Australia.
- Later, he was the Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations. This meant he was in charge of jobs and how workers and businesses got along.
- From 1980 to 1983, he served as Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs. In this role, he represented Australia to other countries around the world.
Important Work as Minister
As the Minister for Employment, Tony Street made a change to how Australia collected information about unemployment. He asked the Australian Bureau of Statistics to start collecting monthly figures. This made the information more accurate and helpful.
As Foreign Minister, Tony Street believed that Australia should work closely with other countries. He said that Australia, as a "middle power," needed a foreign policy that included working with international groups and different countries together. This idea is called multilateralism.
Personal Life
Outside of politics, Tony Street was involved in several companies. He was also a committee member for the Melbourne Cricket Club. He continued to manage his family's property in Lismore.
Tony Street passed away on 25 October 2022, at the age of 96.
