Top Moon (born in 1960, died in 1984) was a famous Quarter Horse racehorse. He was also a very important father (called a sire) to many other fast racehorses.
About Top Moon
Top Moon was a beautiful black stallion, which means he was a male horse. He was born in 1960. His father was a horse named Moon Deck. His mother was a mare (female horse) named Rica Bar. Rica Bar's grandfather was a very famous horse named Three Bars.
Racing Career
Top Moon was a very fast horse on the racetrack. He raced for three years. During that time, he competed in 40 races. He won 15 of those races! He also finished second nine times and third five times.
He earned a top speed rating of AAAT. This rating shows how incredibly fast he was compared to other horses. He also won over $40,000 in prize money. Top Moon won two special races called stakes races. These were the PCQHRA Futurity and the Bardella Stakes. A "futurity" is a race for young horses, usually two-year-olds.
Top Moon's Offspring
After his racing days, Top Moon became a very successful breeding stallion. This means he had many foals (baby horses) who also became great racers. Some of his most famous children include:
- Top Bug
- Bug's Alive in 75
- Moon Lark
- Lady Bug's Moon
- Casady Casanova
- Full Moon Zestee
Two of his children were especially famous. Bug's Alive in 75 won the 1975 All American Futurity. This is one of the biggest races for Quarter Horses! Bug's Alive in 75 was also named the best Quarter Running Stallion of 1975.
Another son, Moon Lark, won the All American Futurity in 1978. Moon Lark was named the best two-year-old Quarter Running Colt in 1978. The next year, in 1979, he was named the World Champion Quarter Running Horse. This is a huge honor!
Honors and Legacy
Top Moon passed away in 1984 because of problems from an ear infection.
Even after his death, Top Moon's legacy continued. In 1999, he was honored by being inducted into the American Quarter Horse Association's (AQHA) AQHA Hall of Fame. This is a very special award for horses who have made a big impact on the Quarter Horse breed. It means he was one of the best and most important Quarter Horses ever!
