A Look at Torbeo's Past

In 1828, a historian named Sebastián de Miñano wrote about Torbeo. He described it as a large and rich area with an abbey (a type of monastery) called Santa Maria de Torveo. He noted it was on a high slope with many chestnut trees.

Long ago, Torbeo was its own town council. In 1827, it had 1030 people living there. Records from 1785 show Torbeo as a special area with both church and noble landowners.

There was an important monastery in Torbeo from the 1100s to the 1500s. A famous person named Vasco Pérez de Quiroga, born in 1135, was buried there. His tombstone said he was a good and generous person.

In 1555, a saying about Torbeo was written down: "When you go to Torbeo, bring your own bread." This might mean it was a remote place. The abbey in Torbeo had many people living under its rule during the time of King Philip II.

Another well-known person from Torbeo was Filomena Arias, also called "The Witch or Wise of Torbeo." She was famous for her healing and fortune-telling abilities in Galicia during the late 1800s and early 1900s. People came from far away to seek her help. Her stories are even mentioned in books by famous authors.

Important Places to See

The most famous building in Torbeo is the Santa María church. It was built in the 1100s in the Romanesque style. Experts have called it one of the best examples of rural Romanesque architecture in Galicia.

Another special building is the Pazo da Casa Nova. A "pazo" is a traditional Galician manor house.

And, as mentioned before, don't forget the amazing meander of A Cubela in the village of A Cubela.
