What is the Torre del Almirante?
The Torre del Almirante is a historic tower that has stood for many centuries. Its exact age is a bit of a mystery, but we know it's older than many other towers built nearby. These other towers were often used as batteries (places for cannons) and watchtowers. The Torre del Almirante played a similar role, helping to guard the coast.
A Look Back in Time: Its History
This tower has seen a lot of history unfold. It was very important for defending the area around the Bay of Gibraltar.
Early Uses and Admirals
One of the most famous times the tower was used was in the 14th century. A brave admiral named Egidio Boccanegra used the tower during the Siege of Algeciras (1342-1344). A siege is when an army surrounds a city to try and capture it. The tower would have been a key lookout point during this time.
We know the tower existed by 1608 because it appeared on a map from that year. After 1704, when Gibraltar was captured, the tower became even more important. People saw Gibraltar as a place where British forces might try to land, so the tower was made stronger to help protect Algeciras.
Defending the Coastline
The Torre del Almirante was put to good use during the Battle of Algeciras in 1801. During this battle, the tower was a base for four large cannons. These cannons were called 24-pounder guns, which means they fired very heavy cannonballs. Their job was to guard the northern entrance to Algeciras, keeping enemies away. Later, in the 20th century, the tower was even used for machine guns, showing how its defensive role changed over time.
The Tower Today
Today, the Torre del Almirante is no longer used for defense. Its old ruins are now part of a beautiful park called Paseo Cornisa. This means visitors can explore the area and imagine the tower's long history. It stands as a reminder of the past and the important role it played in protecting Algeciras.
