The Story of Torrefazione Italia
How It Began
The very first Torrefazione Italia coffee shop opened in Seattle, Washington, in 1986. These shops served delicious espresso, coffee, and fresh baked goods.
The person who started Torrefazione Italia was Umberto Bizzarri. In the mid-1980s, he joined forces with Jim Stewart, who founded Stewart Brother's Coffee. This company later became known as Seattle's Best Coffee. Together, they created a new company called Seattle Coffee Holdings.
Growing the Coffee Business
In 1995, Seattle Coffee Holdings built a new, modern place to roast coffee beans. This roasterie was located on Vashon Island, Washington. Here, they made both Seattle's Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia Coffee.
Later, in 1998, a company called AFC Enterprises bought Seattle Coffee Holdings. They changed its name to Seattle Coffee Company.
Torrefazione Italia coffee shops began to open in many other cities across North America. Some of these cities included Vancouver BC, the San Francisco Bay Area, Portland, Boston, Chicago, and Dallas. The company also sold its coffee in large amounts to places like restaurants, hotels, bakeries, and other coffee shops.
Joining the Starbucks Family
In 2003, Starbucks, another big coffee company from Seattle, bought Torrefazione Italia. They also bought Seattle's Best Coffee at the same time.
In 2005, Starbucks decided to close all 17 Torrefazione Italia coffee shops. The shops in San Francisco, for example, closed on October 27, 2005. However, the Torrefazione Italia coffee brand itself continued to exist. You can still buy this coffee today. It is sold in coffee shops, hotels, offices, schools, and hospitals all over the United States.

Caffè Umbria
The Bizzarri family, who started Torrefazione Italia, later began a new coffee business. Umberto's son, Emanuele Bizzarri, started a new coffee roasting company and coffee shop chain called Caffè Umbria. He is a third-generation coffee roaster, meaning his family has been roasting coffee for a long time!
