Torreon's Past: A Look at History
Early Pueblo Life
Torreon was built where an old Piro village once stood. The Piro people lived here before the Spanish arrived in the 1500s. This site was part of the Salinas District. This district included several mission towns. These towns were on the east side of the Manzano Mountains.
Challenges and Abandonment
In the mid-1600s, the Apache people moved south. This made the mission towns need stronger defenses. However, by 1677, the Torreon site was left empty. In 2020, the population was 187 people.
Resettlement and New Beginnings
In the spring of 1841, Torreon was settled again. Nino Antonio Montoya and 26 other farmers started a new community. They received a special land grant to do this. The Torreon Grant was named after defensive towers. These towers were built in Manzano, a town nearby. The grant covered an area about three miles east to west. It was also six miles north to south.
Facing Challenges: Apache Raids
Attacks from the Apache people were a big problem. This continued until after the American Civil War. Things improved when Edward Hatch became the military commander in New Mexico.
