Torsås Municipality (Torsås kommun) is a cool place in Sweden! It's the most southern part of Kalmar County. The main town, or "seat," is called Torsås. The name Torsås means "Thor's ridge," which is pretty neat! This municipality was formed in 1971 when two areas, "old" Torsås and Söderåkra, joined together.

Exploring Torsås Municipality

Torsås Municipality has lots of forests, just like much of the Småland area in Sweden. It's also located right by the Baltic Sea. This means you can find some open plains and farmland too.

Since not many people live here, Torsås Municipality wants to invite more people to move in. They often talk about their beautiful nature and how nice it is to live in a smaller community. Plus, it's only about 30 minutes away from bigger cities like Kalmar and Karlskrona.

Towns and Villages

There are three main urban areas, or "localities," in Torsås Municipality. These are places where more people live close together. The biggest town is the municipal seat, Torsås.

Here are the main localities and their populations as of December 31, 2005:

A small part of the village Brömsebro is also in Torsås Municipality.

People of Torsås

Around 7,100 people live in Torsås Municipality. This number includes everyone, no matter their age or where they come from. About 5,500 of these people are Swedish citizens old enough to vote.

In the 2022 Swedish general election, about 40% of voters supported the left-leaning political parties. Around 58% voted for the right-leaning parties.

Most adults (around 76-84%) in Torsås Municipality have jobs and pay taxes. A large number of residents (84-91%) were born in Sweden, with at least one Swedish-born parent. About 9-16% of residents have a foreign background, meaning they were born abroad or have two parents born outside Sweden.

The average monthly income for adults in Torsås Municipality is around 21,800 to 24,500 Swedish kronor. Many people (25-36%) also have a college degree or higher education.

Fun Things to See

Torsås has some interesting places to visit:

  • Treaty Monument: There's a special monument that honors the Treaty of Brömsebro. This was an important agreement made between Denmark and Sweden way back in 1645.
  • Garpen Lighthouse: You can visit the Garpen lighthouse. It's on a tiny island off the coast. You can even stay overnight in a hostel there!
  • World's Largest Wooden Ladle: If you like unique things, check out the world's largest wooden ladle in Gullabo. It's super big, measuring about 4.64 meters (over 15 feet) tall and 1.07 meters (about 3.5 feet) wide. It weighs a massive 350 kilograms (around 770 pounds)!
