Torso Miletus Louvre Ma2792
A marble statue of a (male) human torso. It was found in Miletus. It dates from around 480 - 470 BCE. It is in the Louvre museum, in Paris

The torso, also known as the trunk, is the main part of your body. It's like the central hub where your arms, legs, and head are all connected. Think of it as the core of your body, holding many important organs and helping you move.

Your Body's Trunk

The torso is a very important part of your body. It's where many of your vital organs are located, like your heart, lungs, and stomach. It also provides a strong frame for your body, allowing you to stand, sit, and move in many different ways. Without your torso, you wouldn't be able to do much at all!

Parts of the Torso

Your torso is made up of three main areas:

  • Chest: This is the upper part of your torso. It's also called the thorax. Inside your chest, you have your heart and lungs, which are protected by your rib cage.
  • Abdomen: This is the middle and lower part of your torso, below your chest. It's often called your belly. Your abdomen holds many organs that help you digest food, like your stomach, intestines, and liver.
  • Back: This is the rear part of your torso. It runs from your neck down to your hips. Your back contains your spinal column, which is a strong set of bones that protects your spinal cord. The spinal cord is like a superhighway for messages between your brain and the rest of your body.

Why the Torso is Important

The torso has several key jobs:

  • Protection: It acts like a strong shield for your most important organs. Your rib cage protects your heart and lungs, while your abdominal muscles help keep your digestive organs safe.
  • Support: Your spine, located in your back, gives your body its main support. It helps you stand upright and keeps your body stable.
  • Movement: Many muscles in your torso help you twist, bend, and reach. These muscles also help you breathe and move your arms and legs.
  • Connection: The torso is the central point where your limbs (arms and legs) are attached. This allows you to use your arms for tasks like writing or throwing, and your legs for walking or running.
