History of Tortuguitas
From Farmland to a Town
Long ago, the land where Tortuguitas is now was a huge farm called an estancia. It belonged to a person named Alonso de Escobar during colonial times.
In 1925, the Blas País family bought this land. Around the same time, the Córdoba Central Railway built train tracks through the area.
The First Train Stop
In 1930, Antonio Maura started the Tortugas Country Club nearby. Because of this club, a small train stop was created. It was simply called Apeadero km 40, which means "Km. 40 Stop."
Later, on June 9, 1947, this stop was made into a proper train station for the General Belgrano Railway. This date is often seen as when Tortuguitas officially began.
Growing into a Community
Starting in 1942, the Blas País family began selling parts of their land to people who wanted to build homes. There used to be many dairy farms in the area. Slowly, these farms were turned into neighborhoods where people could live. This is how Tortuguitas became a "bedroom community" – a place where many people live but travel to other cities for work.
Even though Tortuguitas is on the edge of the Greater Buenos Aires area, it was easy to get to the main city. This was thanks to Route 8. In the 1980s, this road was made into a faster freeway. This also helped factories and businesses grow in the eastern part of Tortuguitas, along Route 8.
