How Toshiba Started

Early Beginnings
- In 1875, a man named Tanaka Hisashige started a factory that made electric equipment. This was one of the companies that would later form Toshiba.
- The other company, Tokyo Denki, started in 1890 and focused on making light bulbs.
Becoming Toshiba
In 1939, these two companies, Shibaura Seisaku-sho (Tanaka's company) and Tokyo Denki, merged. They formed a new company called Tokyo Shibaura Electric K.K. Later, this company became known simply as Toshiba.
