Toshinobu Katsuya (勝矢 寿延, Katsuya Toshinobu, born September 2, 1961) is a former Japanese football player. He was a strong defender who played for several top clubs in Japan. He also proudly represented the Japan national team.

Club Career Highlights
Toshinobu Katsuya started his football journey playing for Shimabara Commerce High School. He then continued playing while attending Osaka University of Commerce. After finishing college in 1984, he joined a team called Honda. This team was part of the Japan Soccer League.
Playing for Honda FC
Katsuya quickly became a star player at Honda. He was even chosen for the "Best Eleven" team twice. This means he was considered one of the top 11 players in the league. He played for Honda until 1991.
Moving to Top Teams
In 1991, Katsuya moved to Nissan Motors. This team later became known as Yokohama Marinos. He continued to play at a high level there. In 1994, he joined Júbilo Iwata, another well-known club. His last team was Cerezo Osaka in 1998. He retired from playing football at the end of the 1998 season.
National Team Journey
Toshinobu Katsuya also played for the Japan national team. This is a big honor for any football player.
Early International Matches
He first joined the national team in September 1985. His very first game was against Hong Kong on September 22, 1985. He also played in important tournaments like the 1986 Asian Games. He also played in the qualifying games for the 1988 Summer Olympics.
Asian Cup Victory
After a break from the national team, Katsuya was called back in 1992. This was a special year because Japan won the 1992 Asian Cup. Katsuya played in three matches during this exciting tournament.
World Cup Qualifiers and "Agony of Doha"
In 1993, he played for Japan in the qualifying matches for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He stepped in to play when another player, Satoshi Tsunami, was injured. Katsuya was on the field during a very famous and sad game for Japanese fans. This game is known as the "Agony of Doha". In that match, Japan needed to win to go to the World Cup, but Iraq scored a goal in the very last moments. This meant Japan did not qualify. This game was Katsuya's last for the national team. He played a total of 27 games for Japan.
Futsal Career
Besides regular football, Toshinobu Katsuya also played futsal. Futsal is a type of indoor football played on a smaller court. In 1989, he was chosen to play for the Japan national futsal team. He played in the 1989 Futsal World Championship held in the Netherlands.
Coaching After Playing
After he stopped playing football, Katsuya started a new career as a coach. In 1999, he began coaching at Cerezo Osaka, one of his former clubs. He mostly worked as a coach and also helped find new talented players as a scout.
