Toshinobu Katsuya, born on September 2, 1961, is a former Japanese football player. He was a defender who played for several clubs and also represented the Japan national team.

Playing for Football Clubs

Toshinobu Katsuya started his football journey by playing for Shimabara Commerce High School. After that, he played for Osaka University of Commerce.

Early Career at Honda FC

In 1984, after finishing college, Katsuya joined Honda. This team was part of the Japan Soccer League at the time. He played very well and was chosen for the "Best Eleven" team in the 1985–86 and 1986–87 seasons. This award goes to the best players in the league.

Moving to Yokohama and Júbilo Iwata

In 1991, Katsuya moved to another team in the Japan Soccer League, Nissan Motors. This team later changed its name to Yokohama Marinos. He then moved to Júbilo Iwata in 1994. His last club was Cerezo Osaka, where he played in 1998. He stopped playing professional football at the end of the 1998 season.

Playing for the Japan National Team

Toshinobu Katsuya also played for the Japan national team. This is a big honor for any football player.

First Appearances for Japan

In September 1985, Katsuya was chosen to play for Japan in the qualifying matches for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. His first game for Japan was on September 22, against Hong Kong. He also played in the 1986 Asian Games and the qualifying games for the 1988 Summer Olympics in 1987.

Winning the Asian Cup

In 1992, Katsuya was called back to the Japan national team after five years. He was part of the team that won the 1992 AFC Asian Cup. This was a big achievement for Japan. He played in three matches during this important tournament.

The Agony of Doha

In 1993, Katsuya played for Japan in the qualifying matches for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He stepped in for an injured teammate, Satoshi Tsunami, during the final round. His last game for Japan was a very famous match that Japanese fans call the "Agony of Doha." In this game, Japan needed to win to go to the World Cup, but Iraq scored a goal in the last moments, which meant Japan did not qualify. Katsuya played 27 games for Japan in total.

Futsal Career

Besides football, Toshinobu Katsuya also played futsal. Futsal is a type of football played on a smaller indoor field. In 1989, he was chosen for the Japan national futsal team. He played in the 1989 FIFA Futsal World Championship in the Netherlands.

Coaching Career

After he stopped playing, Katsuya became a coach. In 1999, he started coaching at Cerezo Osaka, one of his former clubs. He mostly worked as a coach and also as a scout, looking for new talented players.
