The Touriñán Lighthouse is a working lighthouse located in Muxía, Galicia, Spain. It stands on Cabo Touriñán, a rocky point on the famous Costa da Morte (Coast of Death). This lighthouse helps ships navigate safely. It is looked after by the port authority of A Coruña. This is actually the second lighthouse built here.
A Look Back: Touriñán's Lighthouses
The first lighthouse at Touriñán was finished in 1898. It was a single-story house for the lighthouse keeper. The light tower was right in the middle of its roof.
A newer lighthouse was built next to the old one. It started working in 1981. This new tower is 11 meters (about 36 feet) tall. It is shaped like a cylinder. It has two walkways and a lantern with a grey dome.
How the Light Works
The light from the Touriñán Lighthouse is very powerful. It shines from 65 meters (about 213 feet) above sea level. This means ships can see its light from far away. The light can be seen for 24 nautical miles, which is about 44 kilometers.
The lighthouse has a special light pattern. It flashes white light three times every fifteen seconds. This unique pattern helps sailors know it's the Touriñán Lighthouse.
