The Tourle Street Bridge is actually a pair of road bridges that help cars and trucks cross the Hunter River in New South Wales, Australia. These bridges connect Mayfield West to Kooragang. They are an important part of the road system in the Hunter Region.

All About the Tourle Street Bridge

The Tourle Street Bridge is not just one bridge, but two bridges that work together. They carry a road called Tourle Street over the wide Hunter River. This river is in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. The bridges help people travel between the areas of Mayfield West and Kooragang.

How the Bridge Changed Over Time

The story of the Tourle Street Bridge involves a few different bridges over the years.

The First Bridge

The very first bridge at this spot was made of steel. It was a truss bridge, which means it had a special design with connected triangles to make it strong. This original bridge opened a long time ago, on February 20, 1965. It served the community for many years.

The First New Bridge

Over time, the original bridge had some limits. For example, very tall vehicles sometimes had trouble fitting underneath it. So, a brand new bridge was built right next to the old one. This new bridge was made of concrete. It had two lanes for traffic. It officially opened on May 6, 2009. After this new bridge was ready, the old 1965 steel bridge was taken down. The new concrete bridge helped solve the problem of vehicle height restrictions.

Adding a Second Bridge

Later, even more changes happened to help traffic flow better. In June 2018, another bridge was built. This new bridge was almost exactly like the 2009 concrete bridge. It was built in the same spot where the original 1965 bridge used to be.

Now, with two bridges side-by-side, traffic can move more smoothly. The bridge built in 2009 now carries traffic heading north. The newer bridge, opened in 2018, handles traffic going in the other direction. This setup helps manage the flow of cars and trucks across the river more efficiently.
