The Towers on Capitol Mall were plans for two very tall buildings in downtown Sacramento, California. These buildings, called The Towers on Capitol Mall I and II, were designed to be 53 stories high. They would have reached 615 feet (187 meters) into the sky.
The plan was for these towers to be "mixed-use." This means they would have different types of spaces inside. There would be 804 condos, which are apartments that people own. There would also be a 200-room hotel and shops on the ground floor. If built, these towers would have been much taller than any other building in Sacramento. The current tallest is the Wells Fargo Center, at 423 feet (129 meters).
Construction on the Towers stopped in 2007. This happened because of money problems with the developer. Two big financial groups, CalPERS and Deutsche Bank, were helping to pay for the project. However, certain conditions were not met, and the project could not continue. Now, CalPERS is working with another company, CIM, to build a new project on the same spot. This new plan will be smaller but will still include a hotel, condos, and offices. It will even use the strong foundations that were already built for the original Towers.
Where the Towers Would Be Located
The Towers were planned for a very important spot at 301 Capitol Mall. This location is close to the famous Tower Bridge. It is also just a few blocks from the California State Capitol building. The Capitol is where the government of California works. This area used to be home to the Sacramento Union newspaper.
Why the Project Stopped
The project for The Towers on Capitol Mall is currently on hold. No sales or construction are happening. The company in charge of the money, First American Title Company, is giving back all the money that people had paid to reserve a condo. This money had been kept safe in a special account since 2006. The project might start again with CalPERS and CIM, but with a different, smaller design.
