Towie is a small village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is located near the towns of Alford and Lumsden. The village sits right by the River Don. Towie is also a civil parish, which is a local area used for administrative purposes.

Life in Towie

Towie has a small primary school with a nursery. In 2011, it had 22 students. After primary school, students go on to attend Alford Academy. The village also has a bowling club. There is a beautiful church with an old, historic graveyard.

Towie's Tech First

In 1979, something special happened near Towie. The telephone exchange at Glenkindie, just north of the village, became the UK's first digital telephone exchange. This was a big step forward for phone technology. Digital exchanges were more reliable than older, mechanical ones. They helped improve phone calls for everyone.

Sir William MacGregor

Sir William MacGregor (1846–1919) was born in the Towie parish. He was a medical doctor. Later, he became the governor of several British colonies. These included Newfoundland (1904–1909) and Queensland (1909–1914). After he passed away, he was buried with his parents in the village's churchyard.
