TownMall of Westminster, once known as Cranberry Mall, is a large shopping center. You can find it in Westminster, Maryland, United States. It is located right on Maryland Route 140.
This mall is managed by Westminster Mall LLC. It has more than 80 different stores for you to explore! You can also find a food court to grab a meal and a movie theater to watch films. The main, big stores, called 'anchor stores,' are Belk, Boscov's, Dick's Sporting Goods, and RC Theaters.
Mall History: From Cranberry to TownMall
The mall first opened its doors on March 4, 1987. Back then, it was called "Cranberry Mall." When it first opened, it had several big 'anchor' stores. These were Leggett (which is now Belk), Caldor, Montgomery Ward, and Sears. Montgomery Ward opened a little later, in 1990.
Changes in Anchor Stores Over Time
Over the years, some of the original anchor stores changed.
- Montgomery Ward closed in 2001. Its space was then taken over by Boscov's.
- Caldor closed in 1999. This spot later became the first Steve & Barry's store in Maryland.
- After Steve & Barry's closed, that large space was divided in 2010. It became home to Dick's Sporting Goods, Gold's Gym, and Paradise of Fun. Paradise of Fun is now known as Fun and Fit Factory.
It's interesting to know that this mall is special! It's the only mall that has both Boscov's (a store from the northeastern U.S.) and Belk (a store from the southern U.S.) in the same building. The Boscov's store also has the only escalators in Carroll County. It might even have the only freight elevator there!
Recent Updates and Ownership Changes
In June 2017, Gold's Gym announced it would close. This happened because they couldn't agree on a new lease. Later that year, a new gym called THE GYM opened in the same space.
In December 2017, a big announcement was made. The mall was sold to a new owner, Westminster Mall, LLC.
On October 15, 2018, it was shared that the Sears store would be closing. This was part of a plan to close many Sears stores across the country. Sears had filed for a type of bankruptcy. The Sears store at the mall officially closed on January 6, 2019.
