Town and Country Shopping Center is a fun place to shop in Kettering, Ohio, United States. It first opened its doors in 1951. This shopping center has both indoor walkways and outdoor areas. These paths connect many different stores and restaurants. It's a great spot to find all sorts of things!
History of Town and Country Shopping Center
When Town and Country Shopping Center first opened in 1951, it was very modern. It was one of the first shopping centers of its kind in the suburbs. A big store called J.C. Penney moved here in 1956. Before that, it was in downtown Dayton.
The Ohio History Connection says this shopping center was special. It was one of the first places to have bright lights for signs and parking areas. This meant people could shop even at night!
In 1992, a store called Stein Mart became one of the main, big stores here.
Big Changes and Renovations
In 2014, the owners of Town and Country announced exciting news. They planned a huge makeover for the shopping center. This big project cost about $7 million! Some of the main stores either moved or got bigger to make space.
It was also announced that TJ Maxx would open a new store here. Other changes made the inside and outside of the center look much better. Even the parking lot got an upgrade!
Trader Joe's, which is the only one in the Dayton area, got much bigger. Its space grew by 25 percent as part of the renovation. A new covered walkway was also built. This walkway helps connect smaller shops located behind the main shopping center.
Sadly, Stein Mart closed down in 2020. The company announced it would close its Town and Country store. Even though its lease was until 2023, the space became available for new stores.
