What is Toyo University?

Toyo University started a long time ago, in 1887. It was first called the Private School of Philosophy. A person named Enryo Inoue created it at a temple called Rinsho-in. He believed that the study of philosophy (which is about big ideas and how we think) was not taught enough in Japanese schools back then.

In 1906, the school moved to its current main location, the Hakusan Campus. That's when its name changed to Toyo University. The school's main saying, or motto, was "Protection of Country and Love of Truth" (護國愛理).

How the University Grew

When it first opened, Toyo University offered classes in philosophy, religion, and how to be a good person (ethics). Students could also study education, Japanese language, and old Chinese texts. Over time, the university grew and added many more subjects.

In 1949, the university changed a lot. It added new areas of study like Literature, Economics, Law, and Engineering. Later, in 1997, they added studies about how regions develop and about life sciences. A special school for law was created in 2004. They also opened a research center in 2003 to study tiny things like bio-nano electronics.
