History of Toyo University

Toyo University started a long time ago in 1887. It was first called the Private School of Philosophy (Shiritsu Tetsugakukan (私立哲学館)). A person named Enryo Inoue founded it at a temple called Rinsho-in. He believed that philosophy – which is about thinking deeply about life and knowledge – was not taught enough in Japanese schools back then.

In 1906, the school moved to its current main location, the Hakusan Campus. That's when its name changed to Toyo University. The school's motto was "Protection of Country and Love of Truth" ((護國愛理)).

At first, students could study philosophy, religion, ethics, education, Japanese, and classical Chinese. Over the years, the university grew a lot. In 1949, it added many new areas of study, like Literature, Economics, Law, Sociology, Engineering, and Business Administration. Later, in 1997, more faculties like Regional Development Studies and Life Sciences were added. The university also opened a law school in 2004 and a special research center for Bio-Nano Electronics in 2003.
