Website Trail View State Park

Trail View State Park is a cool state park that stretches for 454 acres (1.84 km2) on Long Island, New York. It sits right on the border between Nassau and Suffolk counties. This park is special because it's a "linear park," meaning it's long and narrow, like a green pathway. It was created in September 2002 and connects two other awesome parks: Bethpage State Park and Cold Spring Harbor State Park.

Exploring the Park's Past

How Trail View State Park Began

Trail View State Park was once land set aside for something totally different! In the 1960s, the state of New York bought this land. The idea was to build a highway extension called the Bethpage State Parkway and Caumsett State Parkway. This land was known as a "right-of-way," which means it was a path or corridor planned for transportation.

From Highway Plan to Park Land

Even though the highway was planned, it was never built. So, the land sat unused for many years. It was managed by the New York State Department of Transportation. But then, in September 2002, this long strip of land was officially opened as Trail View State Park! It became a place for nature and outdoor fun instead of cars.

Adding the Bethpage Bikeway

Later, in late 2012 or early 2013, something new was added to the park. The Bethpage Bikeway, a paved path for bikes and walkers, was extended right through Trail View State Park. This made it even easier for people to enjoy the park and connect to other areas by bike.

Park Size and Connections

Trail View State Park is about 7.4 miles (11.9 km)-long. It acts like a green bridge, connecting Bethpage State Park and Cold Spring Harbor State Park. The park covers a total area of 454 acres (1.84 km2).

Fun Activities for Everyone

This park is a great spot for many outdoor activities. You can go hiking on its trails, or enjoy a bike ride on the Bethpage Bikeway. There's also a special nature trail where you can learn about the plants and animals. If you love horses, there's a bridle path for horseback riding. It's also a fantastic place for bird watching, so keep an eye out for different bird species! In winter, when there's snow, you can even go cross-country skiing.
