Playing Career Highlights

Starting with St. Gallen

Tranquillo Barnetta began his professional football journey with his hometown team, St. Gallen. This was for the 2002–2003 season. In his first year as a pro, he played in 30 games and scored 5 goals.

Time with Bayer Leverkusen

Barnetta's strong start in Switzerland caught the eye of teams abroad. In January 2004, he joined the German club Bayer Leverkusen. During his first season with Bayer, he was loaned to Hannover 96. He returned to Bayer Leverkusen in March 2005.

After playing well in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Barnetta became a regular player for Bayer. The 2008–2009 season was a bit tough for him. Bayer finished lower in the league, and he scored fewer goals. Despite rumors of leaving, he found his great form again in the 2009–2010 season. He scored two goals in his second league game. This helped Bayer stay unbeaten for the entire first half of that season.

Playing for Schalke 04 and Eintracht Frankfurt

On July 2, 2012, after his contract with Bayer Leverkusen ended, Barnetta joined Schalke 04. He signed a three-year contract with them. This move was a free transfer, meaning Schalke did not have to pay a fee for him. He was given the number 27 shirt.

During the 2013–2014 season, Barnetta was loaned to Eintracht Frankfurt. He played there for a full season before returning to Schalke 04 in June 2014. On September 23, 2014, he scored his first goal for Schalke in his second league match of the 2014–2015 season.

Joining Philadelphia Union

On July 29, 2015, Barnetta signed with the Philadelphia Union in the United States. He joined them midway through their 2015 season. He scored his first goal for the Union on September 20, in a home game against the Houston Dynamo.

After a full preseason, Barnetta became a key attacking player for the Union in 2016. He scored 5 goals and made 4 assists. He helped Philadelphia reach the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2011. Before the 2016 season ended, Barnetta announced he would return to Switzerland. He wanted to play for his hometown club, FC St. Gallen, while he was still fit. He finished his time with Philadelphia with 45 appearances and 6 goals.

Returning Home to St. Gallen

Barnetta signed a contract with St. Gallen on November 14, 2016. He started playing for them on January 1, 2017. He played for St. Gallen until the end of the 2018–2019 season. After that season, Tranquillo Barnetta decided to retire from professional football.
