What Was the Treaty of Paris (1857)?
The Treaty of Paris (1857) was a very important document. It brought peace after a short but intense war between Persia and Britain. The main goal of the treaty was to settle disagreements and prevent future fighting.
Why Was the Treaty Needed?
The treaty was needed because of the Anglo-Persian War. This war started over control of the city of Herat, which is in modern-day Afghanistan. Both Persia and Britain had interests in the region. Persia wanted to control Herat, but Britain saw this as a threat to its influence in India. The war involved battles and diplomatic arguments. To stop the fighting and make peace, both sides agreed to meet and sign a treaty.
What Did Persia Agree To?
In the Treaty of Paris, Persia made several key promises:
- Persia agreed to pull its soldiers out of Herat. This was a major point for Britain.
- Persia also promised to apologize to the British ambassador. This apology would happen when the ambassador returned to Persia.
- Finally, Persia agreed to sign a new agreement about trade. This was called a commercial treaty. It would help improve business between the two countries.
What Did Britain Agree To?
Britain also made promises in the treaty:
- Britain agreed not to give shelter to people who were against the Persian ruler, known as the Shah. This meant Britain would not protect enemies of the Shah inside their embassy.
- Britain also dropped a demand they had made earlier. They no longer insisted that Persia replace its prime minister.
- Another demand Britain gave up was about land. They stopped asking for certain areas to be given to the Imam of Muscat, who was an ally of Britain.
