Treaty of Rouen (1517) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Treaty of Rouen was an important agreement signed on 26 August 1517. It was made between two countries: France and Scotland. This treaty helped to renew a very old friendship and agreement called the Auld Alliance.

What Was the Treaty of Rouen About?

The main goal of the Treaty of Rouen was to make sure France and Scotland would help each other. They promised to provide military support if one of them was attacked. This was especially important if England tried to invade either country.

Why Was This Treaty Important?

The treaty made the "Auld Alliance" strong again. This alliance was a long-standing friendship between Scotland and France. It meant they would be allies and support each other, especially against their shared rival, England.

Promises of Help

Both countries agreed to send soldiers and money if needed.

  • France promised to send 100,000 gold coins.
  • France also agreed to send 1,500 German soldiers (called landsknechts).
  • They would also send 500 foot soldiers and 200 archers.
  • Scotland, in return, promised to send 6,000 men to help France.

A Royal Marriage Idea

The treaty also mentioned a possible future marriage. It suggested that James V of Scotland might marry a daughter of Francis I of France. However, this part of the agreement was not the main focus. It was only a possibility if things worked out. At the time, Francis I's daughter was already promised to someone else.

Who Signed the Treaty?

Important people from both countries worked on this treaty. It was negotiated and signed by John Stewart, Duke of Albany, who represented Scotland. For France, Charles IV, Duke of Alençon, signed the agreement.
