About Tremaine Wright's Life and Work
Tremaine Wright grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She lived very close to her childhood home. She went to Duke University and then studied law at the University of Chicago Law School. After finishing school, she worked as a lawyer. She worked for private law firms and also helped people as a public defender in Brooklyn.
Before becoming a state politician, Tremaine Wright was involved in her local community. She was the chairperson of Brooklyn Community Board 3. This group helps make decisions for the local area. She also used to own a coffee shop in her neighborhood. In 2009, she ran for a seat on the New York City Council.
Serving in the New York State Assembly
The New York State Assembly is one of the two parts of New York's state government. Its members help make laws for the state. In 2016, the Assembly member for Wright's district, Annette Robinson, decided to retire. She had served for sixteen years.
Tremaine Wright then decided to run for the open seat. She won the Democratic primary election against Karen Cherry. This meant she became the official candidate for her party. Wright then won the general election without anyone running against her. She officially started her job on January 1, 2017. She served in the Assembly until 2021.
Running for the New York State Senate
The New York State Senate is the other part of New York's state government. Like the Assembly, its members also help create laws. On January 11, 2020, State Senator Velmanette Montgomery announced she would retire. She had represented New York's 25th State Senate district. Senator Montgomery supported Tremaine Wright to take her place.
Wright then entered the race for the State Senate. She ran against a schoolteacher named Jabari Brisport and a former staff member of Senator Montgomery, Jason Salmon. The Democratic primary election was held on June 23, 2020. After all the votes were counted, Jabari Brisport won the nomination.
