The Trinidad Scorpion Butch T is a type of very hot chili pepper. It is known as one of the hottest peppers on Earth! This special pepper comes from the country of Trinidad and Tobago.
It got its name from Neil Smith, who received the seeds from Butch Taylor. Butch Taylor owns a farm and a company that makes hot sauce. People call these peppers "scorpion" peppers because their pointed end looks like a scorpion's stinger.
World's Hottest Pepper Record
For three years, the Trinidad Scorpion 'Butch T' pepper was officially the hottest pepper in the world! This was confirmed by Guinness World Records.
In March 2011, a test showed that this pepper had 1,463,700 Scoville heat units. The Scoville scale is how we measure how hot a pepper is. The higher the number, the hotter the pepper!
Some people believe a secret to its extreme heat is using liquid from a worm farm to fertilize the soil.
However, in August 2017, the Carolina Reaper pepper took the record. It was measured at 1,641,183 Scoville heat units, making it the new hottest pepper.
