About Trinity Church
Trinity Church is found in the small village of Milton. It stands on the north side of Milton Road, just east of where it meets Shearshop Road. The church is a single-story building made of wood, with a pointed roof and outer walls covered in overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.
Church Design and Features
The church has tall, arched windows on its front and sides, which are shaped like the pointed arches often seen in Gothic buildings. The main entrance is also set inside a Gothic-arched space. This entrance is framed by flat, decorative columns called pilasters and a decorative border called a cornice.
Above the entrance, the roof has a fully triangular section called a pedimented gable. This gable also has a small Gothic-style window. A tall tower rises from the middle of the roof. This tower has a square section called a belfry, where bells would be. It has arched openings with slats, and pointed decorations called pinnacles at its corners, next to the base of the steeple.
Inside the Church
Inside Trinity Church, you can find an organ that was built in 1823. This makes it possibly the oldest organ still in use in all of New England!
History of the Church
The group of people who formed this church started meeting in 1795. They were a branch of the St. Michael's Episcopal Church, which was located in the main village of Litchfield.
Building the Church
The design and construction of Trinity Church were led by a person named Oliver Dickinson. Building the church began in 1802 and was finished in 1826. Dickinson started working on his design in 1802. He wanted the new Trinity Church to look like the second building of the famous Trinity Church in Manhattan, New York City. That Manhattan church was later taken down in 1839.
