  • The James Alldis House in Torrington is a fancy Queen Anne style house built in 1895. It belonged to a manager at a big needle factory, which was very important to Torrington's history.
  • The Leroy Anderson House in Woodbury was home to a famous composer named Leroy Anderson. He wrote many popular songs, like "Sleigh Ride"!
  • The Jabez Bacon House in Woodbury is another old home, listed way back in 1971.
  • The Amos Baldwin House in Norfolk is a historic home from 2016.
  • The Capt. Philo Beardsley House in Kent is a charming old house from 1979.
  • The Joseph Bellamy House in Bethlehem was listed in 1982.

Litchfield County also has important historic bridges and sites that show its industrial past.

  • Boardman's Bridge in New Milford, over the Housatonic River, was listed in 1976.
  • Bridge No. 560 (also known as Cornwall Bridge) crosses the Housatonic River between Cornwall and Sharon. Built in 1930, it's a large concrete bridge.
  • Bull's Bridge in Kent is a historic covered bridge over the Housatonic River, listed in 1972.
  • The Cornwall Bridge Railroad Station in Cornwall was listed in 1972.
  • The Kent Iron Furnace north of Kent is an old iron furnace site from 1977.
  • Lover's Leap Bridge in New Milford is another historic bridge over the Housatonic River, listed in 1976.
  • The Minortown Road Bridge in Woodbury crosses the Nonewaug River and was listed in 2001.
  • The Mount Riga Ironworks Site in Salisbury was an important iron-making site, listed in 1994.

  • The Migeon Avenue Historic District in Torrington has 9 important buildings, including a Shingle Style house called Laurelhurst. It was listed in 2002.
  • The Milton Center Historic District in Litchfield was listed in 1986.
  • The New Milford Center Historic District in New Milford was listed in 1986.
  • The New Preston Hill Historic District in Washington was listed in 1985.
  • The Norfolk Historic District in Norfolk was listed in 1979.
  • The Phelps Farms Historic District in Colebrook was listed in 1983.
  • The Pine Meadow Historic District in New Hartford was listed in 1996.
  • The Plymouth Center Historic District in Plymouth was listed in 1999.

Unique Historic Spots

Litchfield County also has some truly unique places that are important to history.

  • The American Legion Forest CCC Shelter in Barkhamsted was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. The CCC was a program during the Great Depression that put young men to work on public projects.
  • The Beckley Furnace in North Canaan is an old iron furnace from 1978.
  • The Haystack Mountain Tower in Norfolk is a historic tower from 1993.
  • The Lighthouse Archeological Site (5-37) in Barkhamsted is the site of an old mixed-race community from the 1700s and 1800s.
  • Lime Rock Park Race Track in Salisbury is a unique race track that opened in 1959. It's special because it doesn't have stands; spectators watch from open fields!
  • Music Mountain in Canaan was listed in 1987.
  • The Mount Tom Tower in Mount Tom State Park (in Litchfield, Morris, and Washington) was listed in 1993.
  • The Norfolk Country Club House in Norfolk was listed in 1982.
  • The Norfolk Downs Shelter in Norfolk was listed in 1984.
  • The Old Riverton Inn in Barkhamsted was listed in 1992.
  • The Paugnut Forest Administration Building in Torrington was listed in 1986.
  • The Peoples Forest Museum in Barkhamsted was listed in 1986.
  • The Red Mountain Shelter in Cornwall was listed in 1986.
  • The Tapping Reeve House and Law School in Litchfield is a National Historic Landmark. It was the very first law school in the United States that was separate from a college! Famous people like Aaron Burr Jr. studied here. It was listed in 1966.
  • Skee's Diner in Torrington is a cool barrel-roofed diner that was moved into place in 1944. It was listed in 2002.
  • The Sports Building in Norfolk was listed in 1984.
  • The Steward's House-Foreign Mission School in Cornwall is a National Historic Landmark from 2016.
  • St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Washington was listed in 1994.
  • The Winchester Soldiers' Monument in Winchester (Winsted) is a monument to soldiers from 1984.
  • The Oliver Wolcott House in Litchfield is another National Historic Landmark. This house, built in 1753, was the home of Oliver Wolcott Sr., who signed both the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation! It was listed in 1971.
  • The World War I Memorial in Norfolk was listed in 1984.
