Winchester is a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. In 2020, about 10,224 people lived there. The city of Winsted is also part of Winchester. The town is located in the Northwest Hills Planning Region.

History of Winchester
Winchester became an official town on May 21, 1771. It was named after the city of Winchester in England.
Geography and Nature
Winchester is in the northeastern part of Litchfield County. The city of Torrington is to its south. Winchester is about 28 miles northwest of Hartford, which is the state capital. It is also about 27 miles north of Waterbury.
The town covers about 87.6 square kilometers (33.8 square miles). Most of this area is land, but about 3.4 square kilometers (1.3 square miles) is water. Some of the larger lakes in Winchester are Highland Lake, Crystal Lake, and Winchester Lake. The Still River flows through the eastern part of the town. It is a branch of the Farmington River.

Getting Around Winchester
Buses from the Northwestern Connecticut Transit District help people travel around the town.
The city of Winsted is where Connecticut Route 8 and U.S. Route 44#ConneU.S. Route 44 meet. Route 263 connects Winchester Center with Winsted.
Schools and Learning
Winchester Public Schools manages schools for students from kindergarten to 6th grade. The Gilbert School is the public school for students in grades 7 through 12. Before 2011, middle school students went to schools run by the Winchester district.
Northwestern Regional School District No. 7 has Northwestern Regional High School. Part of this school is in Winsted. However, it is not the main public high school for Winsted students. Students from Winchester can attend Northwestern Regional High School through its Agricultural Education Program.
Explorations Charter School is also in Winchester. This school helps a variety of students. It is designed to meet the special learning and social needs of its students.
There was also a private school called St. Anthony School in town. It closed in 2020. The school had been open since 1865. It closed because fewer students were enrolling.
Northwestern Connecticut Community College is located in Winsted.
