Trinity Hall (in Irish: Halla na Tríonóide) is a special place where students from Trinity College live. It's like a home away from home for them. Trinity Hall is located in Dartry, a part of Dublin, Ireland. It's about four kilometers south of the main Trinity College campus. The beautiful Botanic Gardens of Trinity College are also on the same site.

History of Trinity Hall

The First Trinity Hall: A Look Back in Time

The very first Trinity Hall was set up a long time ago, in 1617. It was near what is now College Green in Dublin. The land was bought from Dublin City Council. The idea was to use it for teaching and for students to live there.

However, during a big event called the Irish Rebellion of 1641, the building became damaged. Trinity College couldn't afford to fix it. So, a smart doctor and senior member of Trinity, John Stearne, stepped in. He arranged for the hall to be repaired. In return, it became a place just for doctors. This new college, started in 1654, later became the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. It grew to be almost completely separate from Trinity College.

The Modern Trinity Hall: A Home for Students Today

The land where the current Trinity Hall stands was bought by Trinity College in 1908. The goal was to create a living space especially for women students. Many people helped pay for this, including Edward Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh and Frederick Purser.

In 1910, the site grew even bigger. A nearby house and its land were given to the college. This house was renamed Purser House. It was named after Sarah Purser, a relative of Frederick Purser.

Trinity Hall was a home for women students until the 1970s. That's when men were also allowed to live there.

Today, Trinity Hall mainly houses students who are in their first year of college. Some spots are also available for second-year students and those studying for advanced degrees.

In 2004, a big project made Trinity Hall much larger. It can now house over 1,000 students! Before this, it could only hold about 180 students. The modern Trinity Hall has 12 separate buildings. These buildings have many apartments, usually for five to seven students. There are also some smaller apartments for staff members.

How Trinity Hall is Managed

The rooms at Trinity Hall are given out by the Warden. The Warden and their helpers, called Assistant Wardens, also make sure students follow the rules. The Warden lives with their family in Purser House, right on the Trinity Hall site. The current Warden is Professor Nigel Stevenson.

The Junior Common Room (JCR)

Trinity Hall is also home to the JCR. The JCR is a group of second-year students. They organize fun events for students. They also work to help students and make sure they are happy and well.
