Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A trio is a group of three people who make music together. They might play musical instruments or sing. The word "trio" can also mean the actual piece of music they are playing.

If three people are singing together, they are called a "vocal trio."

What is a Music Trio?

In classical music, composers often write pieces for small groups of musicians. These are called chamber music. A trio is a very common type of chamber music. The name of the trio often tells you which instruments are playing.

Common Trio Instrument Groups

  • A piano trio usually has a piano, a violin, and a cello. This is one of the most popular combinations.
  • A string trio is for three string instruments. This is usually a violin, a viola, and a cello.

Other Interesting Trio Combinations

Many different groups of instruments can form a trio!

Sometimes, three people play together on just one piano! This is usually called a piece for "piano 6 hands." It means three people are using all six of their hands to play the same piano.

Trios are not just for classical music. You can find trios in popular music too, like the band Nickel Creek.
