The Trois Milles River (which means Three Miles River in English) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into Lake Saint-Georges, which is connected to the Gamache River. This river is located on Anticosti Island, a large island in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.
The river is part of the Minganie Regional County Municipality in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec. A main forest road on Anticosti Island follows this river valley. This road starts from Port-Menier and crosses the river just south of Princeton Lake. The main activity in this area is related to airport operations.
River's Journey: Where it Starts and Flows
The Trois Milles River begins its journey at Princeton Lake. This lake is about 1.4 km (0.87 mi) long and sits at an altitude of 81 m (266 ft) above sea level. A small stream from the north feeds Princeton Lake.
The lake's water flows out from its south shore. From there, the river's source is:
- About 6.8 km (4.2 mi) northeast of the Port-Menier airport runways.
- About 12.9 km (8.0 mi) north of the village center of Port-Menier.
- About 8.3 km (5.2 mi) southeast of Anticosti Island's north shore.
How the River Flows
From Princeton Lake, the Trois Milles River flows southwest. It runs between two other rivers: the Gamache River to its west and the rivière aux Canards to its east.
The river drops about 80 m (260 ft) as it flows for 13.9 km (8.6 mi). Here's how its path looks:
- It flows 3.5 km (2.2 mi) south until it reaches a bend.
- Then, it goes 10.4 km (6.5 mi) southwest in a mostly straight line. It passes southeast of the Port-Menier airport and goes under a bridge that leads to the airport.
The Trois Milles River then empties into the northeast shore of Lake Saint-Georges. This lake then flows into Gamache Bay, which connects to the large Gulf of Saint Lawrence. This meeting point is about 14.4 km (8.9 mi) east of Pointe aux Pointe-Ouest on Anticosti Island. It's also 11.3 km (7.0 mi) southeast of the island's north shore and 1.4 km (0.87 mi) north of Gamache Bay.
Why is it Called "Trois Milles River"?
The name "Trois Milles River" comes from a simple fact. The road that leads to the airport crosses this river exactly three miles from the center of Port-Menier village. "Trois Milles" means "Three Miles" in French.
The official name "Rivière Trois Milles" was recognized on September 12, 1974. This was done by the "Banque des noms de lieux" (Bank of Place Names) of the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the official organization for place names in Quebec.
