Troy is a small, unincorporated community in Fluvanna County, Virginia, United States. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own city government. It's located just west of U.S. Route 15. You can find it between Zion Crossroads to the north and Palmyra to the south. Troy's history is strongly connected to an old railway that used to run through the area.
History of Troy
Before it was called Troy, this area was known as Clarksland. The community got its new name from "Captain" T. O. Troy. He was the president of the Virginia Air Line Railway, which was a very important train line back then.
Construction on the railway began in October 1906. At first, the train stop in Clarksland was just a small shed. But around May 1908, Captain Troy built a full train station there. This station became a central part of the community, helping it grow and become successful. The station building was even shared with the town's general store, which was run by James Hasher.
The railway was finished and started operating in October 1908. However, over time, fewer people used trains. By 1927, only one train ran daily. Train service completely stopped in 1954. This happened because more people started using cars and airplanes for travel. The railway officially closed in November 1975.
What Happened After the Railway?
Years later, in 1998, a new facility was built near Troy. This was the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, a prison for women. It was built by the Virginia Department of Corrections. This new center brought jobs and activity to the area.
Location and People
Troy is easy to find from U.S. Route 15. It's just south of Zion Crossroads. The community itself is located east of U.S. Route 15, along a road called Fluvanna County Road 631, also known as Troy Road. Troy is part of the larger Charlottesville metropolitan area.
The Troy post office serves the local ZIP Code 22974. This ZIP code covers Troy and also includes parts of nearby counties like Albemarle, Louisa, and Orange. In 2010, about 3,954 people lived in the area covered by this ZIP code.
