Troy L. Nunley, born in 1964, is a very important judge in the United States. He is currently the main judge, called the chief judge, for the federal court in Eastern California. This court handles many different kinds of legal cases.

Early Life and Education
Troy L. Nunley was born in San Francisco, California. He went to college at Saint Mary's College of California and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986. Later, in 1990, he earned his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. This degree is needed to become a lawyer.
Career Before Becoming a Federal Judge
Before becoming a federal judge, Mr. Nunley had a busy career. He worked as a deputy district attorney, which means he helped the government prosecute crimes, in Alameda County from 1991 to 1994. He also worked in Sacramento County from 1996 to 1999. For a couple of years, from 1994 to 1996, he had his own private law practice.
From 1999 to 2002, he was a deputy attorney general in the California Attorney General's office. Then, from 2002 to 2013, he served as a judge on the Sacramento County Superior Court. This is a state court that handles many local legal matters. Since 2006, Judge Nunley has also taught law as a professor at Lincoln Law School of Sacramento.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On June 25, 2012, President Barack Obama chose Troy L. Nunley to become a United States district judge. This meant he would serve in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California. The United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary held a meeting about his nomination in September 2012. The Senate then approved his nomination on March 22, 2013. He officially started his job as a federal judge on March 26, 2013.
On September 17, 2024, Judge Nunley became the chief judge of the court. The chief judge has extra responsibilities, like managing the court's operations.
