About the Song
"True Love's Kiss" was made to be a special tribute to and a funny copy of the "I Want" songs from old Disney princess movies. These classic songs were often sung by princesses in films from the 1930s to the 1950s.
Creating the Music
Making this song was a big challenge for the creators. They wanted it to sound like the old Disney songs but also be a bit of a joke. Alan Menken, one of the songwriters, said it was a "pivotal assignment" because people already had ideas about what such a song should sound like.
The team, including director Kevin Lima, worked hard to get the sound just right. They wanted it to feel like the music from movies like Cinderella. Stephen Schwartz tried to capture the classic Disney feeling, but also add a little twist with the words.
A Classic Disney Style
The song is meant to remind you of tunes like "I'm Wishing/One Song" and "Someday My Prince Will Come". It playfully copies the idea from early Disney princess movies such as Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. In those films, the main characters often meet, sing a song, and then get married very quickly.
At the end of Carrie Underwood's song "Ever Ever After", which plays during the movie's credits, you can hear a small part of "True Love's Kiss" sampled.
Where It Appears in the Movie
This song is heard right at the beginning of Enchanted. It plays during the animated part of the film. In this scene, the character Giselle sings about her wish for "True Love's Kiss". Her wish comes true when she meets Prince Edward.
Giselle and Edward sing separately about love. Then, after Giselle has a funny encounter with a troll, they bump into each other. They then sing about love together. The song helps show that for both characters, finding "True Love's Kiss" is very important to them.
