Discovering Trufant's Past
Trufant got its start thanks to a man named Emery Trufant. In 1872, he built the very first water-powered sawmill here. A sawmill is a place where logs are cut into lumber.
Later, Emery Trufant sold his sawmill to J. B. Hileman and Jacob Hesser. They built a new mill that used steam power. On March 10, 1875, their company officially planned and mapped out the village. They named it Trufant to honor Emery Trufant, who was the first person to settle there.
Trufant was first officially counted as a census-designated place before the 2020 census.
