Trumbull Mall is a popular shopping mall located in Trumbull, Connecticut. It has been known by other names, like Westfield Trumbull and Trumbull Shopping Park. When it opened in 1964, it was the first enclosed shopping mall in Connecticut.
The Frouge Corporation built the mall. Later, in 1977, an Australian company called Westfield Group bought it. This was their first mall purchase in the United States. The mall has a lot of space for stores, about 113,069 square meters (1,217,060 square feet). In early 2023, a company called Namdar Realty Group became the new owner.
The Story of Trumbull Mall
The mall first opened in 1964 as the Trumbull Shopping Park. It had two main big stores, called "anchor stores." These were E. J. Korvette and D.M. Read. It also had a Waldbaum's and a Woolworth's store.
In 1977, The Westfield Group bought the mall. This made it their first mall in the U.S. Later, in 1993, the very first f.y.e. music and movie store opened here.
Changes to the Main Stores
The D.M. Read store changed its name to Jordan Marsh in 1987. Then, in 1992, Jordan Marsh became Abraham & Straus. Finally, in 1995, Abraham & Straus changed into Macy's.
In 1998, the mall's name changed to Westfield Shoppingtown Trumbull. In 2005, it changed again to just Westfield Trumbull. This was part of a company-wide change to simplify names.
In 2005, Macy's moved to a different building in the mall. This new spot used to be a Filene's store. The old Macy's building, which was once D.M. Read, was torn down in 2007. A new Target store was built there. It opened in October 2008.
Recent Updates
In August 2020, the Lord & Taylor store announced it would close. There were plans to turn its large space into a modern office area. This new space would be called York Factory. It would offer things like lunch delivery and wellness studios.
In September 2020, a plan was made to build an apartment complex near the mall. It would be called "The Residences at Main." Construction for this project officially began in October 2021.
On February 14, 2022, a parking garage at the mall had a problem and had to close. This garage was near the Target and JCPenney entrances. Work to rebuild the parking garage started in October 2022.
In January 2023, the company Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield sold Trumbull Mall. They sold it along with another mall in New York. Namdar Realty Group bought both malls.
