Tubul River facts for kids
Tubul River is a river located in the Bío Bío Region of Chile. It flows into the Pacific Ocean. At the mouth of the river, you'll find the small fishing village of Tubul.
River's History and Earthquakes
The area near the river's mouth has cliffs and hills along the coast. Before the year 1835, the last mile of the river was deep enough for boats to travel on. However, a big earthquake in 1835 temporarily blocked the river. This happened because the earthquake caused the sandbar at the river's mouth to rise up.
In 2010, another very strong earthquake hit the area. This one had a magnitude of 8.8 and struck near Concepción, a city not far from Tubul. This powerful earthquake created many large waves. These waves came from both the ocean and the Tubul River itself. They crashed into the village of Tubul and almost completely destroyed it.
