Tunadal (Swedish pronunciation: [tɵnaˈdɑːl]) is a small community located in Sundsvall Municipality, which is part of Västernorrland County in Sweden. In 2010, about 360 people lived there. A locality like Tunadal is a specific area with a group of houses, but it might not be a big city or town.

History of Tunadal and Sawmills

Tunadal is an important place in Swedish history, especially for its role in the timber industry. It was here that a big change happened in how wood was processed.

The Rise of Steam-Powered Sawmills

In 1849, something new arrived in Sweden: the first steam-powered sawmill. This important machine was set up right here in Tunadal. Before this, most sawmills used water power to cut logs.

Steam power was a huge step forward. It meant sawmills could work much faster and produce more timber. This new technology quickly spread across Sweden. Within just ten years, more than twenty new steam-powered sawmills were built.

Why Sawmills Moved to Ports

These modern sawmills were usually built close to ports. This was a smart move because it made it much easier to transport the cut timber. Ships could load the wood directly from the sawmills and carry it to other places, both in Sweden and abroad.

As steam sawmills became popular, many of the older water-powered sawmills closed down. The new technology was simply more efficient and helped Sweden become a major timber exporter. Tunadal played a key part in this industrial revolution.
