About Tunas Creek

Tunas Creek is a Stream. This means it is a small river or a natural flow of water. It is a "tributary" to the Pecos River. A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one. Tunas Creek helps feed water into the Pecos River.

A Look Back in Time

Tunas Creek played an important role in the past. It was a key spot on the old San Antonio–El Paso Road. This road was a major route for travelers. People used it to go between San Antonio and El Paso.

The road crossed Arroyo Escondido, which is now Tunas Creek. This crossing was a popular stop. It was about 16 miles west of a place called Leaving of Pecos. It was also about 8 miles east of Escondido Spring.

Both the creek and the spring were vital watering spots. Travelers and stagecoaches used them to rest and get water. Stagecoaches from lines like the San Antonio–San Diego Mail Line stopped here. These stops were important before reaching Comanche Springs.
