Tupman is a small community in Kern County, California, United States. It is called a census-designated place (CDP) because it's a special area used for gathering population information. Tupman is located about 20 miles (32 km) west-southwest of Bakersfield. It sits at an elevation of 331 feet (101 meters) above sea level. In 2020, the population of Tupman was 177 people.

Where is Tupman Located?

Tupman covers a total area of about 0.5 square miles (1.3 square kilometers). All of this area is land. The community is found at the eastern edge of the Elk Hills. It is also about 3 miles (5 km) northwest of California State Route 119.

The History of Tupman

The area where Tupman is now located was once owned by Hamer Irwin Tupman. He held the rights to drill for oil there. In 1920, a company called Standard Oil Company bought the land from Mr. Tupman. They then established the town. The first post office in Tupman opened its doors in 1921. A special place called Tupman Zoological Reserve was created nearby in 1932. This reserve is now known as the Tule Elk State Natural Reserve. It protects a type of elk called Tule Elk.
