Turtleback Falls, also known as Umbrella Falls, is a beautiful waterfall in Western North Carolina. You can find it close to the town of Rosman. This waterfall is part of the Horsepasture River, which flows through the Pisgah National Forest.

Many visitors reach Turtleback Falls by hiking. The trail often starts in Gorges State Park and goes through parts of the Pisgah National Forest. It's a popular spot for swimming. When the water is low, some people even slide over the falls into a pool below called the "Chug Hole." However, it's important to be careful. When the river flows fast, the currents can be very strong and dangerous.

What Makes Turtleback Falls Special?

Turtleback Falls gets its name from the way the rock looks. The river flows over a large, smooth rock surface that looks a lot like a turtle's shell. This unique shape is what gives the falls its name.

At the bottom of the falls, there's a big, deep pool. This pool is famously known as the "Chug Hole." The river water rushes over the sloping rock and then drops into this cool, deep pool.
