Tux Droid facts for kids
The Tux Droid is a cool robot toy shaped like a penguin. It's based on Tux, the famous penguin mascot for Linux computers. This wireless robot came out around 2007 and was made by a company called KYSOH.
How Does the Tux Droid Work?
The Tux Droid is about 210mm tall, 180mm wide, and 140mm deep when its wings are down. To work, it needs a computer running Linux kernel version 2.4 or newer. The computer also needs a processor (called a CPU) that's at least 800 MHz and 128 MB of memory (called RAM).
The Tux Droid talks to your computer wirelessly. It uses a special signal, but it's not the same as regular Wi-Fi. It gets its signals from a small, plastic, fish-shaped device that plugs into your computer's USB port. The Tux Droid also comes with a remote control that uses infrared light. When you press buttons on the remote, the Tux Droid receives the signals and sends them to the computer. To find and play media, the Tux Droid needs an internet connection. Inside the robot, tiny computers called microcontrollers help it move and respond. Remember, the Tux Droid only works with Linux computers.
What Can the Tux Droid Do?
The Tux Droid can do many fun things! It can spin around, flap its wings, and even light up its eyes. It came with special software that you could use to change how it worked.
This robot can announce events by doing different actions like dancing, flapping its wings, or spinning. It can also make sounds using a system called ALSA. The Tux Droid knows when events happen because of special "gadgets" that are managed by the Tux Gadget Manager software.
