Tuyunga facts for kids
Tuyunga or Tujunga was once a village of the Tongva people. The Tongva are a Native American group who lived in what is now Los Angeles County, California. The name Tuhuunga in the Tongva language means “place of the old woman.” This village was located near where the Mission San Fernando Rey de España was later built in the San Fernando Valley.
People from the Tujunga village often married people from nearby Chumash villages. The Chumash were another Native American group. The area now called Crescenta Valley might have been used by the Tongva for hunting during certain seasons. They could also get water from the canyon there. The Tongva people were skilled at growing plants in the region. A Spanish survey in 1795 noted this. The Spanish were looking for places to build new missions at that time.
