Twatt is a small community found in the Shetland Islands of Scotland. It is located on the main island, known as the Shetland Mainland. You can find Twatt on a smaller road that connects from the A971 road to Clousta, just north of Bixter. This area is part of the Sandsting parish, which is a local administrative area.
What's in a Name?
The name Twatt comes from an old language called Old Norse. The original word was þveit (pronounced like "thveit"). This word means 'small parcel of land'. It was used to describe a small piece of land that had been cleared, often for farming. You might find similar place names in England, like "Thwaite," which also come from this same Old Norse word.
