The twelve-wired bird-of-paradise (Seleucidis melanoleucus) is a special type of bird-of-paradise. It's a medium-sized bird, growing to about 33 centimeters long. These birds are famous for their amazing colors and unique features, especially the males!

Meet the Twelve-Wired Bird-of-Paradise

This beautiful bird gets its name from the twelve special "wires" that stick out from the male's feathers. It's truly one of a kind!

What Does This Bird Look Like?

The male twelve-wired bird-of-paradise is very striking. It has bright red eyes and a long, black beak. Its shoulders and wings are black, but its sides and stomach are covered in rich, bright yellow feathers.

The most amazing part is the twelve black, wire-like filaments. These wires come out from the back of its yellow feathers. They bend in a cool way, sweeping forward over the bird's back.

The female bird looks quite different. She is mostly brown with buffy (light yellowish-brown) feathers on her underside that have black stripes. Both males and females have strong, pink feet with large claws.

Where Does It Live?

You can find the twelve-wired bird-of-paradise in the lowland forests of New Guinea. They also live on Salawati Island, which is part of Western New Guinea. These birds love to live in places where the forest is thick and green.

What Does It Eat?

These birds enjoy a varied diet. They mainly eat fruits that they find in the forest. Besides fruit, they also like to snack on small creatures like arthropods, which include insects and spiders.

How Do Males Attract Mates?

When a male twelve-wired bird-of-paradise wants to impress a female, he puts on a special show. He will display himself on a tall, exposed branch or perch. During this display, he flares out his bright yellow breast feathers, showing off his amazing colors and those unique wire-like filaments. It's a spectacular sight!
